Regulations and what they mean
The life of a bearing on a mobile machine is almost never ended by material fatigue. It ends earlier — through contamination and starvation.

The skipped lubrication point
On a machine with thirty or more points the question is not whether points get skipped but which: the hard-to-reach ones — usually precisely the highly loaded joints. A single early bearing failure on an otherwise well-kept machine is almost always this case. An automatic system removes the distinction entirely: the line goes there, not the person.
What can be measured
The old grease at the point is the proof: clean, light grey means the dose is right and counter-pressure stands at the seal; dark and gritty means abrasive is already inside; none at all means under-supply or a broken line. This visual check is the weekly item in the maintenance plan (PDF, German) for good reason.
