Regulations and what they mean

For lubrication systems on mobile machinery, “universal” does not mean one system fits every machine — it means the same design can be used across a mixed fleet. That is a procurement and maintenance advantage, not a technical one.

What can be standardised across a fleet
ElementStandardisable?Reason
lubricantmostly yesone grease for the whole fleet avoids mix-ups and miscibility problems
pump designoftensame spares, same operation, same diagnosis
divider and allocationnothe quantity per point follows the bearing, not the fleet
line routingnoevery machine has different paths
intervalnofollows each machine's operating hours

Where standardising really helps

The biggest gain is the lubricant: two greases in one workshop mean a mix-up sooner or later, and incompatible thickeners can soften or harden the blend without the consistency class differing on either drum — see NLGI classes. The second gain is diagnosis: one pump design means one failure pattern — whoever knows it on one machine recognises it on all.

Where it does not help

The allocation per point cannot be standardised. A pin bearing on the boom needs something different from a slewing ring, and the demand follows bearing size and load — not fleet policy. A system delivering the same amount everywhere over-greases one half and starves the other.
