Technology

Technical data and selection

Flow sensors answer a different question from cycle sensors: not whether something indexed, but how much actually flowed. In circulating systems, where a bearing is fed continuously with oil, that is the only meaningful quantity — there is no cycle signal there at all.

Three measuring principles for three jobs

The flow sensor is a reed switch operated by a magnet on a pressure-driven piston. It counts strokes and therefore suits cyclically delivering pumps — it does not measure a quantity, it confirms passage. Its smallest readable value of 10 mm³ per stroke defines the resolution limit.

The DGM is a grease meter for dispensing at the grease gun or outlet valve, with batch and totalising counters. The interesting figure is not accuracy but the burst pressure of 1000 bar against a permitted outlet pressure of 500 bar: a factor of two in reserve, because a hand-operated grease gun produces pressure spikes nobody calculates in advance. DropsA publishes the measuring range in gpm; it is reproduced here unchanged.

The Flowmaster II measures volumetrically instead: the fluid moves a rotor on a fixed orbit and every revolution is registered optically. Because the displaced volume per revolution is constant, the result is independent of temperature and viscosity — it needs no compensation and no calibration to a particular oil. That is exactly what makes it usable on circulating systems with changing operating temperatures.

The ATEX flow metering device for hazardous areas

For zones with a potentially explosive atmosphere DropsA carries a dedicated version marked Ex II 2GD C IIC T85 °C, IP 65 (part number 1525818). It works on the positive-displacement principle: a calibrated sequence of spools is moved by the oil flow and a proximity sensor registers that movement.

What matters in practice is the base-plate mounting: the device can be removed for calibration or replacement without disconnecting the tubing. In an Ex area that is no convenience feature — every opened connection there is its own procedure with its own permit. It is designed for volumetric monitoring of small flows on low-pressure lubrication systems.
