What does NSF H1 mean on a lubricant?

NSF H1 is a registration for lubricants where technically unavoidable, occasional contact with the food can occur. It applies to a named product in a named recipe — not to a product family. If the manufacturer changes the recipe, the registration has to be renewed.

What is the difference between H1, H2 and 3H?

H1 applies where occasional contact is technically possible. H2 is permitted only where contact with the food is ruled out. 3H covers release agents in direct contact, for instance on baking trays. The three are not quality grades but fields of use.

Does an H1 registration allow lubricant to reach the food?

No. H1 permits unavoidable, occasional contact — it is not permission to let lubricant enter the product. The system still has to be designed to avoid contact; H1 merely limits the damage if it happens anyway. That is the commonest misunderstanding about this registration.

Is NSF H1 enough, or is ISO 21469 needed?

They cover different things. NSF H1 assesses the product's recipe. ISO 21469 additionally certifies formulation, manufacture and use — including how cross-contamination at the lubricant maker's plant is ruled out — and is monitored recurringly. For an audit, ISO 21469 is the stronger evidence.

Does a whole production line have to switch to H1?

Usually not. The zone decides: H1 belongs where contact is technically possible. In drives with no product proximity H2 is permitted and often more capable. Converting the whole line across the board is rarely the most economical answer.

What matters when switching to an H1 lubricant?

Miscibility with the existing fill. Thickener type and base oil decide whether the blend softens or hardens — and two greases of the same NLGI class can differ completely here. Also check that the registration category fits the zone in question.
