Oil or grease for chain lubrication?
As a rule, oil. Chain elongation arises in the gap between pin and bush, and lubricant only gets there by capillary action — which thin oil manages and grease does not. Grease stays on the outer plate, looks like lubrication and never reaches the joint.
Where does the lubricant have to be applied on the chain?
At the inner plate, on the slack side of the chain. There the oil has time to penetrate the joint before the chain comes under load again. Applied to the outside it misses the wear point, and on a fast chain it is mostly thrown off.
How often does a chain have to be lubricated?
Small amounts often instead of large amounts rarely. A large dose at long intervals is mostly thrown off and lands on floor, product and packaging. Couple the lubrication to the machine cycle rather than the clock — a slower line needs proportionally less.
How do I know the chain lubrication is working?
By the chain elongation. It can be measured on the chain and is the only reliable feedback that the lubricant reaches the joint. A shiny outside says nothing — the joint can still run dry underneath.
Does a packaging line need H1 lubricants?
The zone decides, not the machine. Where the product runs open, contact is technically possible and an H1-registered lubricant is indicated. In the drivetrain with no product proximity H2 is permitted and usually more capable.
What matters with wet cleaning?
The protection grade has to match the cleaning method: IP 54 resists splashing, IP 65 jet water from a nozzle, IP 67 also temporary immersion. With high-pressure cleaning pick one grade higher than the calculation requires — cleaning crews keep no distances.
