How often does a central lubrication system have to lubricate?

There is no blanket interval. What governs it are bearing type, speed, temperature and contamination; the order of magnitude comes from the bearing maker's relubrication data. Automatic systems therefore deliver small amounts often rather than large amounts rarely — the film stays continuous and a slight counter-pressure at the seal keeps dirt out.

Which grease is used in a central lubrication system?

Mostly fluid greases of NLGI classes 000 to 2. The longer the lines and the colder the environment, the softer the grease has to be. The consistency class alone does not describe pumpability, though — what counts is the flow pressure to DIN 51805 at the lowest operating temperature.

Oil or grease — which is right for my system?

Grease stays at the point and seals against dirt; it suits pins, joints and slow bearings. Oil can be metered finely, carries heat away and creeps into narrow gaps — it suits guides, chains and circulating systems. For chains, oil is almost always right, because only oil reaches the chain joint.

How do I know the system is actually working?

A pressure switch only proves that pressure was built. Only a cycle sensor on the divider proves that it actually indexed and lubricant was delivered. Without that second signal a system can show pressure for months and still not lubricate — for instance with a blocked outlet line.

How long may a lubrication line be?

There is no fixed limit. The resistance follows from line length, cross-section, divider resistance and the medium's flow pressure at operating temperature. Design for the cold start: the same grease is far stiffer at −20 °C than at 25 °C, without its NLGI class changing.

Can an existing machine be retrofitted?

Usually yes. The effort depends less on the pump than on line routing and on whether the existing points have grease nipples or fixed connections. Before enquiring, know the number of points, demand per point, the medium and the lowest start-up temperature.
